How the scam works:
You are working on your computer when a pop-up window appears saying your computer is infected with malware. The ad offers two options: “Fix problems” or “Find viruses.” You click on the first one and are taken to a registration site.
The site says for a small fee, it will fix all your computer problems and it will be running like new in no time. In fact, it's your lucky day because there is a special and the fee is actually lower than it usually is!
You snap up the offer, only to realize a few days later that you probably shouldn't have, finding several charges on your credit card. The company seems impossible to reach on the phone to get a refund. You gave away your money and your malware problems are only likely to get worse.
How to avoid:
Even if you're having computer problems or not, you should always have an antivirus software installed on your computer regardless. Or you can always suck it up and run to your local computer shop. It may be a little pricey, but at least you know you’re dealing with a legitimate business. Always rely on reputable companies rather than no names. There are several out there.
Trend Micro is one of the most popular cyber security companies in the world and offers products for home and business users alike. The Trend Micro Custom Defense program is able to detect and eliminate viruses and other threats in real-time, so users never have to worry about an attack getting through on their computers. The program can identify suspicious behaviors before an attack is even launched, which protects vital data and personal information. Some Trend Micro software also has gateway, endpoint, and server protection options, so user data is encrypted at every point of the online process.
